W/Bag Vs Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

Hi, my hoover conquest 1600W vacuum died and i'm looking to buy a new one. My first question is should i get one with a bag or a bagless one? What are the advantages of choosing one over the other?
Based on the first query which brand of vacuum cleaner?
My budget is 200, but it can be stretched to 250 max.
I was loooking to buy the genius vacuum from godfreys but the salesman scared me by saying it will last only 12 to 18 months since its a 'single fan' - whatever that means.
Please advice! Thanks for your help.
Edit: will be using the vacuum on a thick carpet. My hall is pretty big and i vacuum it once a week.
