How is the market for construction cleaning?

I've had quite a few of these jobs, and we're very good at it. With some research and watching my numbers, I've been able to nail down a successful formula. My question is...who to market to. All of my customers to date have been the property owners, except in the case of one man who was managing a job (acting as his own contractor) for his church rectory.

Do contractors ever refer people to construction cleaning companies, or sub-contract with them, or are they more likely to handle this themselves. Is marketing to contractors a waste of time?

Opinions?

Hi,
it totally depends on your contact if you have good tuning with contractor or sub contractor then definitely they will refer other people to you for cleaning. I also got some reference of cleaning costumer through contractor.

Construction Clean Up

Be very, very, very careful which contractor you work for. Remember, you will be the last vendor to be paid by the contractor. Many contractors have used up all their alloted money by the time they get to the clean up phase. I have only done commercial construction clean up and have gotten out of the business after being stiffed too many times. Contractors are notorious for robbing Peter to pay Paul. When Peter is out of money you are stuck.

Starting a business of this type does not need large savings, or much expertise. The company is happy with a machine running water or hydro jet, basic cleaning materials, washing floors and workers with minimum expertise.
The companies charges according to per square meter. In fact to clean a new 10-story building with an estimated area of 150 square feet per plant, can make about 10 thousand dollars in less than a fortnight. Not bad

There are many reasons starting a construction cleanup business may be a good idea. Some of the advantages of starting a construction cleanup business include:
The startup costs are low.
It's a good business for someone who enjoys physical work, being on job sites and the construction/real estate industry.
You can build a solid customer base with contractors, builders and real estate developers

It's competitive and it can be a headache. Deadlines are never met and project managers can be difficult to work with. But there is also money to be made.

Construction cleaning

The market is very competitive, just like many other niches in the cleaning industry. I always hear other cleaners say builders or construction cleaning is easy to get into and doesn't require any skill, this isnt the case at all!

The job actually requires a lot of skill and expertise to do properly, eg. I see many cleaners with no idea on construction cleaning what so ever go into the industry only to end up causing damage to peoples homes. eg. scratched, using acid on marble tiles etc.
To do this properly, there is actually a lot of research that needs to be done, building materials change all the time, you need to ensure you continue to work closely with tradies, builders and manufacturers (tile manufacturers, glass etc) to stay up to date on cleaning methods. Technology and specialised chemicals used in the industry is changing all the time.

In addition, builders usually delay payments so you end up spending 5k upfront doing the job on labour and chemicals and then sometimes have to wait months to get paid (builders can't pay you until they get paid by the homeowners) to them, you are just another trade.
