I think that repeat business is usually not taken into account as much as it needs to be. Your 4 suggestions are good ones...but the next question you need to ask yourself is once I have attracted these customers how do I retain them? Because as I have come to find out delivering your product/service usually isn't enough. Because unless you are absolutely hands down the best in the business, your customers may go w/ someone else next time...someone cheaper? More convenient? Or maybe they wanted to use you again but forgot how to get in touch with you?
It's a process...attract customers....retain customers....rinse and repeat!!

For my business and for most, the important thing is the service to be done professionally. If the customer is satisfied from your job, the price doesn't matter, he will return to you. Another important thing before that is to make coupons, promotions and as annasue said, making the contact easy between your company and the customer, give him a business card and if he is delighted from the service, be sure, he will call you next time.

Thanks for the good advice, do you have any experience with attracting customers online. I have no experience in this area, but I was told to make a website so I built http://smoothcleaners.com for free, now I need to figure out how to get the customers rolling in. So I can keep them!
Any advice will not be ignored. Thank You

Re: Attracting customers online
The best way to attract customers online is post your site in tons of high quality places. Put a signature in your profile here and on other boards, put a link to your site in the signature with the text saying something like "carpet cleaning Richmand" or "professional carpet cleaning" the text in the link is like a vote saying that your site is about whatever the text says. Write articles, post in blogs, find blogs about carpet cleaning or Richmand or anything relevant, where you put your name put stuff like "Richmand carpet cleaning" . Put bookmarks on Digg and stumbleupon and all the bookmarking sites.
SIgn up on all the sites like city search and merchantcircle. Use the sites, merchantcircle allows you to post ads and place comments on other merchants sites which give you backlinks to your page.
Use firefox browser and install some of their seo addons.
You will not see results overnight this way but it will over time get you to the top of the search engines.

Hey best is promote website as well, you need to be well known in your area which you are targeting, and for that you have to do the promotion of your business by organising some events or providing demo services.
For website if people search for cleaning company and your city name than you have to be at top o search results, people will automatically call you from there. You need to do lots of hard work but once your business is set, you can make money!
All the best!!!

All great advice. What shot my business through the roof is the advice my mentor gave me. He is closing his shop after 30 years and thankfully has taken me under his wing in the last two months. He was watching to see how serious I was at first lol.
Anyway a business card is a must, so is a webpage....however what my advice was :
Get a package together with the following:
An introduction letter - outlining what you can do for THEM
Pictures of before and after ...incredibly effective
A copy of your insurance form - they know you are professional
Business Number - accredited is important.
WSIB, WHMIS, any and all safety certificates you have
One or two letters of recommendation
A few business cards
A survey for the client to fill out "AFTER" you land them, it shows you really want their business....add a prepaid return envelope....then they don't have to do anything but fill it out and send it off
A starter discount, maybe one day free or one week...its up to you.
This way when you go into a home or business you don't look like you are just showing up hoping to get a contract, you are saying to the client...I know you are busy but when you get a chance I will leave a welcome package for you to look at. It shows that you are very professional and serious. Hell if you take the time to put together a sales package and not simply a 30 second sales pitch....you improve your chances 10 fold.
My friends this works for me and I know it will work for you!

Give a customer a credit...
...today's higher end window fashions can certainly turn into a major purchase. Whether moving into a new home or remodeling an existing home, window coverings are usually the last thing in, well after the money is spent. It isn't unusual at all for a window coverings customer to need financing. Check with your banker or other financial institutions to help your customers arrange financing. By offering financing in your advertising, apart from bank cards, you'll attract customers who are truly ready to do business.

I know that in this Thread are only professionals but may be you want to here and some customer. I am not agree with that the price doesn't matter if the service is really professional and with high quality. I search for the golden middle and the most important for me is to be comfortable and easy to connect.

You just need to do your job and be polite. Then the customers will recommend you to some friends and as the time goes by you will attract more customers.

Hello Friend,
One of the most important thing is online promotion, web sites provide your company with worldwide exposure and give your customers convenient access to your services and products.
The quality and the service is also the major factor for that you need to monitor the quality of your services and products constantly, satisfied customers who spread the word about your business are the best source of new customers.

I think the best way to retain customer is to give them valid promises and convince them why our service worth for their money. To attract new customers I think we can use the advantage of Internet. Many customers are searching for services in Google and if we have a good website it can convert that searches in to business.

So far we have never gone wrong when doing sampling for a potential customer.
Depending on what services you are offering, if you make the effort to find and approach potential clients then give that a complimentary sample that exceeds their expectations you will develop a pretty good strike rate.
