When You Have Water Damage Mold
Most molds are not toxic, but there are some that can cause allergic reactions, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, memory loss and in some cases, death. That's why it's extremely crucial that these types of molds be cleaned up immediately.
The first priority is to remove any moisture caused by the flooding. For most homeowners, a hiring a mold removal specialist seemed to be the right choice. However, due to the rarity of the Midwest's situation, many homeowner's were unable to hire a specialist because their insurance did not cover flooding and they simply couldn't afford the out of pocket expense.
So many played the waiting game until the homes dried out on their own. Sadly, some are still playing the waiting game to this day. For those that did begin to clean up the affected areas, the first step was to remove any furniture and carpet that had been damaged by molds. Some chose to open the windows to continue to dry out the affected areas while others used dehumidifiers if the damage was minimal.
For those that were covered by their insurance company or had outside help, homeowners were told to begin clean up within 24 hours to keep toxins to a minimum. They were also reminded that any mold removal specialist should be willing to meet that deadline without an argument.
The specialist would then use the proper equipment to stop further moisture and dry the areas completely. Any damp items that were unsalvageable such as carpet, bedding or furniture were discarded. Those items that could be saved were washed, cleaned and dried to prevent further fungi growth.
