Google last month released that link exchanges won't help your ranking and likely will damange your ranking in time.

It's better to buildone way links and links from local organizations such as the BBB.

Dave Yoakum, I do not understand why people try to scare other people who do not know much about SEO.
First, if links to your page do not bring benefits WHY YOU HAVE THAT 2 LINKS in your signature????

Second, why you don't show the link were Google said that?????

Third, but not less important WHY YOU HAVE THAT BUNCH OF LINKS IN YOUR MAIN PAGE???????

Common people teach with the example, if you REALLY don't trust that the links can help your website.............. DON"T DO THAT!!!!

and that is complete INCORRECT!!
In you second post you said: "
Oneway links or google indexed directory, forum and association links are another matter." and that is near to CORRECT.

What Google said is NO LINKFARMS and this 4 points:

Links intended to manipulate PageRank
Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

As you see what Google said is different of what you said in your first post.

The key ingredient to any successful website is backlinks. Plenty of them and relevant to your sites subject. Good page optimization is also important as well as use of keywords and social bookmarking and many other link building methods. All these elements together will increase your page rank and traffic over time.

At all costs, avoid all the methods that are known as 'blackhat'. Do the research and stay informed as to what's acceptable and what's not re SEO. It's the only way to learn.
