A professional roof cleaner will have all the equipments and tools needed to clean your roof. But if you prefer to do the cleaning yourself, you have to have the following tools and other essentials in order to properly do the job.

1. Pressure washer – A pressure washer is a must in tile roof cleaning. You should also have the recommended nozzles appropriate for your type of tiles. Concrete and clay tiles have small pores that can only be cleaned by a manual brushing or with the use of a pressure washer. 1,200 to 1,500 psi is adequate to remove dirt and stains without eroding the surface.

2. Ladder – Have sturdy ladder with foot stays.

3. Plywood – You will use the plywood to distribute your weight. Tiles are fragile and can easily crack under weight pressure. It is better to foam treat the underside of the plywood to lessen the pressure.

4. Cleaning Chemicals – Chemicals and other cleaning agents help the efficient roof cleaning process. Professional roof cleaners use and recommend sodium hydroxide based products. They are safer, environment friendly and just as effective degreaser. The chlorine and water solution is also an effective cleaning option that is also cheaper.
5. Primers, Sealant, and Paint – Cleaning can erode and peel away tile coatings and paint. Newly cleaned tiles are prone to dirt, moisture, and damage. Re-coat the seal and paint in order to protect the tiles from dirt and moss infestation.

6. Replacement Tiles – Cleaning your roof is also a good time to repair minor damages. Replace cracked and loose tiles uncovered during cleaning. There is also the possibility that you might unintentionally damage some tiles walking on the roof.

A scraper and solution, and a ladder of course. Works every time.

1st step: Choose a summer day with temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
2nd step: Cover any plantings beneath your roof with plastic sheeting to keep chemicals off of them.
3rd step: Prepare your roof for the chemicals by removing any moss. Scrape gently with a standard trowel or stiff brush to remove it.
4th step: Put anti-algae solution in a backpack sprayer and apply the solution to your roof.
5th step: Unless manufacturer’s instructions indicate otherwise, you can leave the solution on your roof until it rains. However, keep your plants covered until the job gets finished.

Hope this helps!

Moss and algae can be really annoying if you have a tile roof. It is better to get a scraper and a stiff brush so that the cleaning process would be easier. Chemicals can also be used. My house was built 5 years ago and we had the tile roofing installed by one of the professional roof installation company in Toronto. Never clean the tile roof using a pressure washer. It would damage the surface and the edges of the tile.If pressure washing needs to be done then it is better if you get help from experts.

I've seen that pressure washing can damage roof tiles and there is also a risk of flooding to the loft space. So, is there any other technique which can be used?

Rook cleaning should NEVER be done using a pressure washer. Pressure washers remove the granules protecting the shingles among other things. Using LOW pressure and the correct chemicals guarantee your roof is not damaged and provides the best results. Actually it depends, if you are very disciplined and clean your roof frequently then running a pressure washer over it would be sufficient, but if roof has been lying uncleaned for a long period of time and it has seen unwanted growth specially lichens, then you must first spray the infected areas with the anti lichen mix, leave it for some time and then clean it with the pressure washer.
