If you can't remember what color it used to be, it may be time. Seriously though, ALL carpet manufacturers recommend cleaning your carpet every 6 to 18 months and they require you to clean it at least every 18 months - 24 months. If you have kids, you may want to clean more often.

Although children are wondrous beings with a special gift of bringing joy into your life, they also bring with them something else - kid crud. Crud that can damage the fibers and shorten your carpet's life. Believe us, it's easier (and more socially acceptable) to get rid of the crud.

Here are few ways to identify whether your carpet needs cleaning or not..

# Lift up a corner and slap the back with your hand. If dirt or dust comes out, it needs cleaning.
# Dampen a white towel. Rub the towel across the surface of the rug, if it soils, it is time to clean the rug.
# VIsually inspect the rug. Pull the fibers apart and look for dirt trapped in the fibers.
# You catch your pet in the act of relieving itself, or you spill a glass of your favourite red wine on the rug.

You can know when your carpet needs cleaning by seeing if there are diets inside the carpet. Or maybe you can smell the odor of the carpet. Then of course you will know when you need to clean it.

I clean mine at the beginning of every new season as after winter, the carpets would be looking a little drab. That's just me.
