How to disinfect carpet?

Hello All,

I would like to disinfect an area of carpet without needing to call a steam cleaner. I read online that vinegar will work, but is that really enough for nasty bacteria?
The trouble is, I had a clogged shower line, and as the plumber fixed it, it turned into a main sewer clog. Not only did stuff come from the pipe and fall from the snake onto my bathroom floor, but he was walking back and forth through the house on the carpet, as he worked between the bathroom and the cleanout in the yard. God knows what came from his shoes onto the carpet.
I already bleached my shower and marble bathroom floor. I know I shouldn't bleach marble, but I don't know what else to use that's strong enough. I really needed to feel like I strongly disinfected after that nasty stuff.
My carpet is red, so... I definitely can't use anything that could discolor it. What would be the best thing to spray on it to disinfect? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
