How to protect the carpet
The first step is to have it professionally cleaned the right way. I say professionally, because you donít have access to the same high powered machines or the proper cleaning solutions that a professional carpet cleaner has. And I say the right way, because there are still many companies that use soap based products, which leave lots of residue behind and makes the carpet sticky, hence the rapid re-soiling.
Once itís cleaned, then your job is to properly maintain it with regular vacuuming. At least twice a week, but the frequency should increase if you have lots of traffic and/or pets in the house. In the higher traffic areas, make sure you go in both directions to get all sides of the fiber.
For spot cleaning: use club soda for most stains, and a white vinegar/water solution for organic stains.
Also, after you have your carpets professionally cleaned, itís best to spend a little extra and have them treat your carpet with a carpet protector. Not only will this prevent future stains from becoming permanent, but it will increase the life of your carpet be reducing the effects of wear.
