New carpet smell problem.

I just had new carpet installed and the smell is making me crazy! Iíve got the windows open (too bad since it's 15 degrees) and a fan running, but is there anything else I can do?

Regards,

As an ex carpet layer, there's not a lot you can do without using chemicals etc. Even if you use deodorising powders etc, the smell will be worse while the powders wear off. just do what you are doing now and soon enough the smell will go away.

I'm not sure that will help but you can try with carpet steam cleaner.

Keep those windows open. It's a common problem and it takes a while for the smell to disappear.

Its like that new car smell. It will eventually go away. If you clean it now you will regret it later.

The smell is offgassing from the latex in the backing of the carpet and the padding. You can accelerate the offgassing by heating the room in question. This will speed up the curing of the latex. Opening the windows and cooling the room off is actually slowing down the process.

That is the problem with carpeting. Off gassing happens with all sorts of products and can actually be quite hazardous to your health. I always wondered if there is something that could be done in the carpet industry to sell aged carpet so some of the curing is already done. Kind of like cheese or wine.

Dry-vacuum the carpet several times. You may do this at the same time the fans are going. If the fans and vacuum have not diminished the smell sufficiently.
