Make Your Own Laundry Soap

I began making my own soap when I was first married, I used my grandmother's recipe. Costs under one dollar for the 2 gallon mixture.

Make Your Own Laundry Soap

1/3 to 1/2 Bar of Fels Naphtha Laundry Soap bar (grated)
1/2 C. Washing Soda
1/2 C. Borax
2 Gallon of Hot water

Tools need:

One 2 qt. Saucepan
Wooden or Plastic Spoon
A Whisk
Cheese Grater
2 Gallon Container
Heavy Plastic Storage bottles {laundry soap bottles work best}
Funnel

To make your own soap you will need the tools listed above, which can not be used again for any thing else:

Recipe:
Grate and put the 1/3 to 1/2 bar of laundry soap bar (any bar soap can be used if you do not have the Fels, or use other laundry bar soaps such as Zote) into sauce pan with one quart of water.

Heat on stove on low heat long enough to melt the baf soap. (do not boil!!) Remove from heat pour mixure into a bucket or 2 gallon containerand, add the washing soda and borax, mixing until fully dissolved. Finish filling with the remaining water.
Cover and let set for 24 hours to set up. {Or for best results, use a whisk and whisk the mixture every couple of hours as it cools, this will help to seperate it}.

This mixture will be a seperated gel and water mix, you need to use the whisk to mix the mixture before pouring into bottles or jugs.
(mixture will also need to be shaken in bottle before measuring out)
Use 1/2 C. to a washer load of clothes.
You may need to use more for ex-large load washers, or heavily soiled clothes.

Note: If you have really hard water, use a 1/8 to 1/4 c. of calgon, or water softening agent.
