What are your biggest pain points?

Hi all, I'm new around here and am working to wrap my head around running a cleaning business (commercial or residential). I'm hoping people with more experience can answer my question about parts of the job that really need to be improved.

What is your biggest problem? What do you spend the most time doing?

Here's a couple things I've noticed just reading over the forum:
  • Finding new customers
  • Defining your rates / how much you should charge
  • Managing your supplies
  • Collecting payments from customers
  • Finding good employees

I'm hoping this will give me a better understanding of some of your cleaning companies and ways I can improve. Thanks!

Largest issues are staying motivated, not relaxing because you feel business is good and disappointment when losing customers. All other items on your list can create stress and headaches but can be overcome with experience, hard work and learning from your mistakes. This business can be very rewarding and crushing, all in the same day! At the end of the day, this business is strictly a numbers game and great customer service will make you successful.

Finding new customers.... easy. No problem there.

Rates.... While most others worry about what everyone else is charging, I've never known WHY!!! I calculate what I need to make and then add what I want to make in profit = my rates. Now like he said above, experience plays a roll in this one because I can walk in to a house and tell you how long it should take to clean it.

Supplies.... I pay about 1 penny per bottle of everything that is liquid and .07cents per Magic Eraser.... not much to figure there. No idea why people buy those high priced supplies. I really laugh at the $1 store people bragging so I always have to tell them they just paid .99cents more than I did.

Payment.... is always on the counter when the girls came in the house. No payment = no cleaning. I haven't had a customer that was behind in payment in years.

Good employees.... people suck and are lazy. This is true no matter what business you are in. If you can afford it, lately the staffing places are a little better than they used to be. Although they charge a fee, they take care of all the taxes and all that stuff. The quality of worker has went up just a little with the high unemployment. But that doesn't mean the IQ will be much over 93
