Coupons & Special Offers

I think anytime you send out direct mail or hand something out at a community event you should include some type of coupon or special offer. Why? Because it gives the recipient a reason to keep what they have in their hand. Otherwise they may just throw it away and think "I'll look them up when I need them". When they have a coupon in their hand they have something to put on their refrigerator and remind them over and over again.

So, do you give coupons and if so what type of offers do you give out?

Here is an example of a door hanger we used. We got a good response from these but if I was making them over again I would have made the coupon stand out more and maybe even detach.

Are you a referral only business or do you advertise a lot for work?

Thanks. Pretty doesn't alway sell jobs but this one did OK.

We always had a yard sign that we left in front of homes we were working on so the neighbors would see and start to get curious. Then we would go down the street 10 houses on both sides and then on the other side of the street (40 per job). It was a good re-enforcement. They saw we did good work, they saw our job sign, then they got something to keep and a coupon.

That one was done on DesignOutpost.com which I highly recommend for print material and logo design.

Dave, I'd really be interested to hear why you dislike coupons so much.

I have mixed feelings about coupons. I could offer $500 off and just price the job accordingly(add $500 to my bid). What I fear is that most people think of them as a scam. I think there are more modern calls to action to generate customer response.

It wasn't a scam for me meaning I did not up my price when I offered a coupon.
The coupon told them to give it to us after the estimate was presented so they saw that the price came down instead of us just "working it in". They got the same bid either way.

The main issue I have is with direct mail. What causes people to hold on to what you gave them instead of just pitching it?

Also, my biggest leads generator was Valpak and people expect a coupon.

Anyways, I'm not saying my way is the only way just interested in hearing everyone's view. Good feedback
