Postcards: Effective or Not?

Hey everyone,

We just landed our first office cleaning job and now we are looking to get another. I purchased 100 postcards from VistaPrint and included a special on it. The special is: First cleaning free with a 6 month contract.

Has anyone had success with post cards? If so what message is effective? I need to make sure that my post cards grab attention.

I have heard that when sending out direct mail it is best to follow up also. Inform me on the success of this method. How did you recieve your first contract?

I just sent 100 of them I guess I'll know soon. I will definitely follow them up with a call I think that's a good idea. As far as my first contract it was a bit of dumb luck. I sent this accountant a letter and also left a voicemail. They called me in response to a fax they got from another cleaner who didn't put their contact number on the fax. (stupid). I got thr call did the proposal and now I got the deal! I'm also working on one which contacted me via craigslist. Not bad so far but I need a couple more

Congrats Cleaner by minute. That sounds like something that happens on a movie. But that was very great timing on your behalf to have sent the information when the others messed up. When you do your direct mailing do you have a mailing permit?

No I do not have a mailing permit. Would that help with mass mailings?

I have heard that it is cheapier but im not sure I was looking into that for myself. In Indianapolis it is $186 a year to send out unlimited postcards.

Postcards are very effective, if used for the right purpose. I like to use them to thank my clients, and then to either promote or offer a way to talk about their experience with our cleaning business. Thank-you cards are an amazing way to thank and further promote services you offer, or even resolve issues with unhappy clients.
Just make sure to avoid things that will upset customers, so setting up a good thank-you postcard is very important.

100 postcards is not a large enough sample size. Did you pass them out at random or are these targeted to a specific demographic or businesses? You will have much better success if you put some thought in to it and target specific neighborhoods with the right demographics for residential. Don't expect to knock it out of the park with 100 postcards (especially if residential), also be aware that some folks may hang on to your card for many months before calling. Follow up up is key with conversion as well.

This original thread was posted 4 years ago, but a good bump for this topic regardless. I would say the goal of postcards is to get a lead to call so you obtain their phone number. If you already have the contact number for a potential lead then why not just call them?

That being said it's definitely about getting your postcard in their hands at the right time (I.e. when they need your service) For that reason the key in direct mail is repetition. You can't just send out one batch of postcards. It should be sent out consistently over a specified period of time. By doing this the prospective customer will be more likely to contact you, since they remember getting your postcard. Keep in mind they are being bombarded by numerous other competition in most cases. For example I receive letters from a local insurance agent every few months- the same agent sends me a letter and his business card. Of course when I'm not looking for insurance it goes in the trash...but when I needed a quote he was the first guy I thought to call.

Bottom line keep mailing until they tell you to stop and try several different messages to find out which has the best response rate is my advice.

You might want to look into EDDM mailing if you want to do direct mailing. It stands for Every Door Direct Mail and basically the postal carrier drops your card off at every address. You don't have to put addresses and any of the pieces and instead of paying $.49 a piece you pay $.31 In terms of post card response for a cleaning company you have to realize that you have to hit people that are interested in cleaning services and are currently looking. If you find the right neighborhoods you might be able to hit 5% of the homes that use a service. If they turn over cleaning companies every 3 years on average and they spend one month looking then your opportunity window is 1 out of 36 of the 5%. That means your maximum expected return on a post card would be 5/36 or .14% If you got 50% to respond to your card that would be .07% or 7 in a thousand cards. At $.50 per card you are talking about $72 per lead. Land 50% and your cost per customer is $144. Keep them for the average 3 years and your cost per customer as a percent of lifetime revenue is pretty good.

Here is the problem with the numbers above..... 7 is not .07% of 1000. 70 is .07% of 1000. 1000 x .07 = 70

1000 x .007 = 7

And I will assure you that you will never receive 70 calls per a single 1000 pieces mailed in the house cleaning business. Once I got .046% (35 calls out of 750) with flyers but that was not the norm. If you send out 1000 mailers you might receive 3-5 calls if you are very lucky and have a great piece of material you are sending out. If you send out 2000 per a single mailing you might get 10-12 calls. You might even get hellish lucky and get 20 calls. Now if you get all wild and crazy and send out 10,000 pieces in a single mailing you could get 100-150 calls. But like All City said, you need to mail out more than once..... and you can't wait a year to do each mailing. The thing about mailers is..... it kinda reminded me of Craigslist..... not very good calls and people wanting cheap work. I don't know why, it's the same people I give flyers to.... yes, I've done mailers. Did flyers for years and years.... did mailers once and got all the crazies to call.

I did receive .058% (55 calls out of 950 flyers) before in the lawn care business.

My guess is that not many people will even get many calls at all no matter how many you send out..... and it is because of 1 single thing you will put on your mailing.

I do like postcards but i would only spend money on them after you have a great website with good SEO. Its 2015 and most people shop on the internet, your website will always be your best salesman.

I tell my dad (old timers) that its like having a full page in the yellow pages. My friend in the embroidery business used to pay $950/month for a full page ad!!

You can go broke sending out postcards. Im not saying dont send them, but only after you have a great web presence.

If you have the money to do both then do them both. Im just saying for someone with a limited budget, building your site and getting the SEO going should be priority #1. Direct mail #2 and so on.

Also some people think it is easier to fill out a form on your site for an estimate. If they go to your site this is your chance to WOW them and reinforce that you are the professional they are looking for.

Thats my angle, it may not be yours.

Personally, I don't have an 'angel'. We all have different ways, I just like the way that pays off today and not months from now. But that's me.... I like a quick return!
