Guess it depends on the type of site you are marketing, but i find organic results & link exchanges benefit me way more than the paid. i only pay for keywords that have too much competition and the turnover is not great.

We're trying split testing at the minute to find out which method is best. We've cut up the Midlands into four different areas and assigned each area 4 separte industry types. For each area there is a different type of marketing mix. So area one gets an email, area two gets an email and a phone call, area three gets a flyer and a call and area four gets the whole lot.

Once we get the results back we can work out what people best repond to. Now when I've done this before the area that gets the whole lot, thats the call, email and flyer tends to reap the best rewards. But, if there is an area that responds just as well with lets say a flyer then thats the way to go forward, basically because its much cheaper.

I think overall the best thing you can do is try out a bunch of different methods and track your results and responses. A good old excel spredsheet does the trick and that way you can find out whats best for you. Also some methods are massively more time consuming than others which is something you really need to bear in mind. Everyone wants a great website, huge sales force and a top of the range tele sales unit but you've got to do something that can get turned over in a short period of time.

Anyway thats my ten pence worth.

Has anyone else tried split testing?

Linking is king in the inter net world

If you can link your site to at least one relevant site a day or a week you will see more trafic than you know what to do with it, what you do with that trafick and how you convert them to sales is a hole another question

There is the idea of Viral Marketing, sounds bad but its not, don't worry. It sort of combines word of mouth with the internet. Basically you encorage your customers to refer you to other companies in their field. It sounds obvious but done right, it can really work. Addidas had a hugely successful campaign a few years ago where people were encoraged to pass on an email game to win a chance to train with Real Madrid. Now clearly none of us are that well connected to have Real Madrid as a prize (or maybe you do) but if you replace Real Madrid with lets say a 10 discount off your next order then the idea begins to spread.

Seth Godin is the key thinker behind "Viral Marketing" and you used to be able to read some of his publications from his blog.

Heres a helpful article

Hope that was of some use

Word of mouth-first and always foremost
We haven't had much response from our site, but our site is seriously in need of updating- but hey I did it myself-I seriously need to invest some and money in that.
In our area-Florida-we have had alot of traffic from the local Chambers of Commerce, I would say that easily 50 % of our business has come from the Chamber-either through their website, or referrals.
One thing that we have had HUGE success with is sending out flyers. When I'm driving I scope out neighborhoods that I think would be good for us. I then go on the the local property appraiser's website, where I can view a map, and get all the streets, and owners names and addresses. I enter those into a database in my computer, and when I have time I send out flyers and business cards. It is expensive with postage, but it is still cheaper than those direct mailing companies. Hope that helps, it works for us.

Ah! Another subscribed thread resurfaces. Is it safe to come out and post?

Padegenis...have you considered the cost of upgrading your website versus the cost of your targeted/focused mailings? You may be surprised!

Yes, I know we need to update, it is just finding the time to sit down with someone who knows how to do it, and knows how to get you higher up on search engines. I am no tech expert! I have no doubt I will do it soon, and I'll continue with the mailings too-thanks!

Isn't it ironic that we are in the business of saving people time...yet we never have it for ourselves?

Cold Calling

I am a commcercial cleaning company and I am focusing on cold calling right now to grow my customers. Would anyone suggest that I make a call list, or should I just open up the phone book and start calling out of there. I'm kinda new at this and could really use some suggestions. Thanks!

Yes I would open the phone book, but start listing the calls by type. Whats the market you really want to get? No one wants to do everything and be good at nothing.

Cold calling commercial customers always works, I have done it for 25 years

Well we have recently purchased a Hospital Phone Book. It has all the hospitals and rehab centers in America and Canada. Military, private, semi-private, Children, psychiatric, general surgery,non-profit etc. over 7,000 names. We are cold calling them by state and sending a small sample to each one over time. It's a big task but we believe it will pay off.

Hospital phone books

Does the phone book only cover hospitals? Or does it also cover clinics and smaller offices as well...

Our company has found that direct mail has been the best option for advertising. Our website is a close second.

I started Google Adwords today. So far we're first on a lot of our keywords. I'm assuming that the calls should start pouring in. I'll let you guys know.
