I have read somewhere...can't remember where...but you can clean old unfinished hardwood and glazed tile flooring with steel wool. Going to have to look into it a bit further though...sorry.

steel wool on marble is great old school usage with a special chemical can polish to a mirror. need to make sure it is the proper grit. i usually get mine from IPT hard rock out of Vegas. There is also a new system for a while now that used a special fairly expensive pads from 3M that have the diamond grit in them and can be used with a high speed buffing machine, they work well but i usually top off with the fine steel wool to really give it a pop. I'd try to stay away from steel wool on other surfaces as i worry about staining. alway be sure to sweep well after using the steel wool if the debris from the steel wool gets wet you can get rust in the floor, especially marble.

Steel Wool

I have not heard about the steel wool for marble. I know a lot of window cleaners who use steel wool on glass. They use #0000 which is the finest. Anything else will scratch the glass. A lot of window cleaners are now switching to Bronze wool, however. The bronze wool won't rust like the steel wool. If you reuse the steel wool and it has a little rust on it can scratch smooth surfaces. You can get bronze wool from window cleaning supply stores on the internet.

Well, I am agree with rowdenbryce Marble flooring is better that other flooring. As a this flooring method is amazingly resilient. It will endure most spots provided that they are washed up right away, although powerful acid beverages may cause spots, which can be expertly removed.

Steel Wool NOT Suggested for Marble Floors

Hi Everyone,
Steel Wool was ONCE used with a fluorocarbon liquid spray for marble floors. It creates extremely high heat and vitrified the top layer, turning it to glass. This created an extremely high gloss finish, but the problem is that it completely sealed the pores of the marble.

This is a problem as marble needs to 'Breathe", allowing vapor to move in and out of the stone with changes in humidity, moisture transfer from a slab, and moisture from mopping (through grout joints).

When marble (including all natural polished stone) cannot breathe, it begins to deteriorate, eventually causing the marble to crumble and fail.

This processed was used in Las Vegas Casinos and many marble floors needed to be replaced.

Best suggestion is using a pH neutral cleaner for natural stone maintenance like HMK P24 Stone Soap.

Marble is certainly the most widely used material for flooring in residential buildings and offices. and using steel wool pads for cleaning them is a wise idea as they are very easy to use. But I would suggest for large scale cleaning of marble floors as in offices one should take services of proffesional cleaners.

Steel wool is NOT a good suggestion for polishing marble under ANY circumstances. Professional services are indeed recommended.

I am agree with you that marble flooring is part of home interior and still many people can have it. Hardwood flooring is the new way of flooring and it is considered as latest trend of flooring.
