Smile Pete from Baltimore

Hello!

I'm Pete from Baltimore. I'm 28 and worked in retail management for 11 years and hated it. I always said that if I could make as much money being a janitor, I would do it! In September of 2009 I founded BoldCloth Cleaning Company. Business has been great, getting most new accounts through referrals from existing clients. I have three part time employees and am out in the field with them everyday.

I have learned other cleaning business owners in my area (or even comfortably outside of it) don't want to talk much to share ideas, etc for fear of having business stolen from them. I am happy to find this site and look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with my internet "coworkers"!

How I Got into the Cleaning Business

Necessity is the mother of invention. I knew I had to be creative to support myself as a writer, and no regular job would do. To work around the writing I had to be my own boss.

I thought that since I had been cleaning the kitchen floor for my mother, I thought I would start a business cleaning kitchen floors. It was only going to be temporary. I'd keep the business small, so,I could get out when I got published.

I didn't have a van. I didn't have a truck, or even a car. With a bucket, rags and a bottle of Spin and Span, I got on a city bus to meet my first client.

The truth is. Cleaning kitchen floors wasnít enough to sustain a business. I didnít know that at the time, but I didnít need to. Clients would always ask me if I did other jobs like cleaning windows, ďNo,Ē I would say, ďbut if you show me, Iíll do it.Ē

Well, that response worked. I simply was honest and said no to cleaning I didnít know how to do but was willing to learn.

I soon discovered cleaning walls was the right way to go into the cleaning business, but all I had to do was get in the door of the cleaning business through cleaning kitchen floors.

Well, I have been in the cleaning business since 1997, and I am still making more money from cleaning than I am from writing, but even though I am not able to to write full time, I still love being my own boss.

I've If you are thinking about going into the cleaning business or any business for that matter, find a way in then work your way up from there.

Hello Pete

I am new to Clean Talk can relate to what you said. I could never understand why other cleaning service owners fear sharing ideas with each other. Because in the long run both of you will learn from each other. I am excited to be here
around professional who don't fear sharing.

Have A Nice Day

Great that you want to collaborate

Pete, great to hear from a small business owner who took matters into his own hands. And great that you're looking to collaborate to help everyone instead of being scared of competition!

Hi Pete,

I'm in the Baltimore area too and I'm totally new to this. My background is also in retail. I did it for a few years right out of college. Now my full-time job is in property management. I'm looking to become my own boss....sooner rather than later. I'd love to exchange ideas with you!
