Employee's

Question: My employees found out what I charged for a new construction clean up. They worked 8 hours each. Three employees plus myself. Well they approached me & stated because this was a big job they felt ENTITLED to get paid more. Two of them were paid $ 10/hour for 8 hours & the lead girl was paid 12/hour for 8 hours. Thats there regular rates. Is it me or do I have a mutney on my hands????

You may have one. You can tell them that is what the company makes not you. Also, if you are paying them above the board then the company has to account for $192 for your techs plus and additional $115.20 for the lead tech plus the supplies, admin costs, etc. Everything associated with that job has to come out of your payment for rendered services. You are paying above minimal wage and a fair wage at that. Do not cave to their demands if it is not warranted. Do not increase their pay level based on demands if their quality of work does not warrant a pay increase. You are in business to make money not give in to the whims of your employees who will always feel that then need/want more $$$ from you said business owner.

I own another labor based business for 13 years now and let me tell you this will happen. If they only knew what else goes on behind closed doors when they are not onsite...I would fire them now before it becomes an issue of quality of work. Remember it is your business not theirs and you are the owner that has to carry the burden of liability.

Greeting from a little further north in New Jersey!

I had a situation like this occur last year. I hired a friend part time to help them out through their recent loss of a job.

Long story short, I landed a large window cleaning job on a college campus in Central NJ. I was paying my friend $20 an hour for the help.

When that friend realized how much that job was going to cost, they DEMANDED $300 for the day, or they wouldn't work.

... and that friend hasn't worked for me since.

I'm a firm believer of giving a little extra to my employees every once in a while for a good job done. However, if they ask for it, or demand it, I consider it an insult and feel they're trying to look a gift horse in the mouth. Thats totally not cool.

I wouldnt give them the extra now, simply because they asked for it. I would however give them a few extra dollars, a tip if you will, in a few weeks just to let them know that their hard work is appreciated.

You already had a negotiated hourly rate with them correct? You don't get to renegotiate for every job. Tell them they can take what you are offering or leave it...there are plenty of people out there looking for work right now. If you cave this time it will just happen over and over again.

I agree with everything said here. It is a bad situation all the way around but stick to your guns and if they dont like it, let them walk.
