How do I know when my carpet needs cleaning?

It depends on several factors including:

foot traffic
intervals in between vacuuming

Carpet is made to hide dirt. Usually people will wait too long for their first cleaning. New carpet in a average house can probably go almost up to two years before the first cleaning.

Carpet holds in bacteria, fungus, and even invisible "crud." Even homes that require shoes to come off at the front door track in the grime from the outside world, and it just stays on the carpet. Definitely vacuum on a regular basis to pick up any of the dirt and grime you can, but I would suggest using a safe anti-bacterial spray. Many people use products like Fabreze on a regular basis, but I do not recommend that at all, as there are chemicals and toxins in Fabreze which are not safe for anybody to inhale. I personally use Sol-U-Mel because it is safe (even if ingested) but it kills all bacteria, and will even kill lice or fleas if you happen to have them! Just mix it with water, and spray all over your soft surfaces (carpets, couches, bedding, etc.)

For the deep cleans, it can also be added to your carpet shampooer.

If you think your carpet is dirty based on color and texture, then it is time to clean it.. You should clean your carpets within two to three months after the last cleaning. :-)

If your carpet is past cleaning and you are thinking of replacing it, i just wrote an article and made a video on how to get the best price on replacing it.

Generally we think about cleaning a carpet when we see dust on this. If you have no children in your home then I donít think it will get dirty soon. You can clean it after 3 months or 4 months.

Carpet dry cleaning should be done least once every 12 months and if you have pets consider having the carpets or rugs dry cleaned more often to stop the build up of ''the pet smell'' and vacuum frequently. Having your carpets dry cleaned is always a great way to prolong the life of your carpet!

Here are five major signs that your carpets need a deep professional cleaning.

If you are seeing stains and discolorations on your carpets, this is a telltale sign they need a good cleaning. Food, wine, pet accidents, dirt, and more can cause unsightly marks on your carpet. While store-bought cleaners and home remedies may work to lift stains immediately after the occurrence, anything thatís more than a few days or even a few hours old can cause lasting damage. Even if you donít see individual stains, you may start to notice that your carpets arenít as bright as they once were. Move large furniture and compare the colors of the exposed and the hidden carpets. If they are even slightly off in color, get a professional cleaning.

No amount of aerosol spray or pluggable air fresheners are going to get rid of odors emanating from your carpet. Pets are a big offender here. Pet accidents can soak through the carpet to the padding beneath, meaning that even if you lifted the stain, evidence of your petís accident remains detectable to your nose. If you are smelling musty or stale smells coming from your carpet, itís definitely time to get them cleaned.

Wear & Tear

Maybe your carpets donít have any particular stained spots and there arenít any odors. That doesnít mean youíre good to go. Carpets get worn over time; fibers get matted down, and you may start thinking of replacing your old carpet entirely. Before you do, try getting it cleaned. Itís amazing what a little love and attention can do for your floors. The ground literally weighs down carpet fibers so when the dirt is removed, the fibers spring back to life. A good cleaning can do more than youíd expect for worn out carpet.

When allergies take a turn for the worse, most people would rush to the doctor, but you should really be rushing to call Sears Clean to schedule a carpet cleaning. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander can get trapped deep in the fibers of your carpet where regular vacuuming wont reach. A full carpet clean can eliminate these allergens from your home and leave you feeling fresher and happier.

If you canít remember the last time you had the carpets cleaned, itís definitely time for it now. New homeowners should have a professional cleaning before moving in and current homeowners should have a regular schedule for carpet maintenance. Once a year is a good time span for a home with average traffic and use. If you have large dogs, kids, or entertain a lot, it may be better to call in the pros twice a year.

Regular carpet cleaning will extend the lift of your carpet and ultimately save you money in the long term. I can attest to the fact that this is true as I had carpeting that lasted over 17 years by maintaining it well.
