Initial Cleaning

I have been having a difficult time getting customers to see the value in the extra charge built into the intial house cleaning. The walkthroughs go very well up to the point of the price of the intial cleaning being two to three times the cost of the maintenance cleanings. I point out the extra services and time involved, but it seems like sticker shock sets in. Any input on ways you've found to put clients at ease and get them to recognize the value in this initial service?

From reading your post and also charging more for the initial clean I would say that you are charging too much for the initial cleaning. I charge about a third to fifty percent above the normal price and this puts customers at ease because I tell them from start that we charge more for the first time clean because we spend time detailing and getting a base for the next time we clean. We have most of our clients as repeat customers who never had a problem with the extra cost. I really think you need to consider lowering your price and telling customers before the walkthrough. I hope this helps.

Cleaning by N&J, thanks so much for the feedback. I normally wind up reducing my initial cleaning price to appease the client and win the account, but perhaps I was asking too much from the start. I normally charge about 2x what I would charge for a maintenance clean. I will try to shoot for close to 1.5 as long as I'm still able to generate a profit with the additional labor hours spent.

I typically charge close to double the maintenance cost as well and I don't have much trouble with that price. It all depends on the condition of the home. Some initial cleans will be less and some much more than the double cost. You need to be fair with your clients and expect the same in return.

We clarify to our customers what the difference between an initial cleaning and routine cleaning is, and they don't have any problems with deep cleaning costing more. Additional deep cleaning items, just to name a few, could be washing a patio screen door, wiping ceiling fans (vs. dusting), washing outside of the front door and some other things. We also bring a taller ladder for the initial cleaning...

I always gauge the initial cleaning cost / reward benefit. Especially if the client will be a repeat customer.

In such a case you must set quotation for the services you are providing so that the client can have an option to choose. In case they do not opt for it then you must show how going for every option will make the place look much better. Also offering a discount over the increased rates would be a nice idea.
