Pro's/Con's subcontracting?

I've had several larger company's call me in the last 2 years to bid on local jobs and up until today I have always turned them away. Today, I agreed to meet this Friday with a guy from ABM to bid a local clinic BUT I'm apprehensive about subbing any job. Some of my concerns are as listed below. Anyone with experience subcontracting please chime in, I need more insight from others in the business.

I've never subbed so I don't know exactly what to expect
Receiving payment ON TIME
Loss of profit due to middle man
Less control of the account

Are there any advantages to subcontracting? Will I be stuck in a contract if things go south?

Advantages...well, maybe for the new business owner desperate for business it's a foot in the door learning experience, but other than that there are no advantages.

You're earning pennies on the dollar when you could be making full price doing it for yourself.

Payment terms are often in the Net 60 to 90 day range.

Needless to say, we turn down all such offers.

We have been working with several national companies over the years including some of our largest accounts. I think you may be turning work away too quickly without giving them a chance. Yes you have to be more careful and go over the numbers carefully but if you develop good relationship with them it's a gold mine. And you would not be able to get into those accounts on your own and charge full price because they have a national company manage the subs for a reason. A national client like a retail store will NOT hire a small local company.

Good afternoon, I ended up getting the bid for this client w/o having to subcontract BUT I want to learn more about subbing and government contracts too. Do you have any info you'd care to share? I'm open to private message or discuss here whichever works for you. I just moved my business to the city and I'm finding far more competition exist here so I thought if I went this route for a bit maybe things will pick up. Let me know

I would say spend some money on advertising and earn work yourself - That is good for your brand name and more profit.
