First Impressions Phoenix Last update - It turns out that the flyers didn't work for me. I put out a total of 1600 flyers (3 different flyers) and placed them in about 7 or 8 different neighborhoods from middle class to upper, upper middle class.

I got one for sure re-occuring client
I got 2 one time cleanings
I received 5 or 6 calls from the flyers

It takes about one hour to hand out 50 flyers so about 32 hours spent doing flyer delivery.

When I did this business the first time, 20 years ago, if I had handed out 1600 flyers I would have gotten about 16 new re-occuring clients. Ah...the internet has changed everything.

So I got a job as a taxi driver and will now concentrate on my commercial cleaning business. I know given enough time that, that will work.

First Impressions Phoenix Flyers delivered today: 100 Total 850

Stats so far from flyer delivery:

Repeat clients (for sure): 1

One time cleanings: 2

Calls that didn't lead to cleanings: 2

So far the numbers are a little disappointing. Looks like I will have to do the Grant Cordone idea and 10X it. Instead of 5,000 flyers, I will have to do 50,000. Sounds impossible, but doable given enough time.

update Nov. 12 2016

I basically am starting my count from 250 due to the typo I had in the flyer I was handing out.

Today I door hung about 300 flyers. I received one new client call from flyers while hanging them. Set up an every other week cleaning of a 3/2 home.

So far from the flyers I have one every other week client, one monthly client, one move out cleaning (done) and one potential every other week client that cancelled because I don't yet have someone working with me and the cleaning would take too long.

I will be handing out flyers again tomorrow (Sunday) after a one-time mid day cleaning that I got from Thumbtack a while back.

RexR Don, that sounds great that you found a marketing strategy with good ROI. Have you thought about hiring a couple of high school kids and increasing your reach?

Flyer update - I just noticed that the flyers I have handed out have a major typo I'm actually surprised that I got any response. I've fixed the typo and will hand out fresh flyers tomorrow. Don

Flyers, my experiences in getting new residential cleaning clients

Hi All,

I noticed that a lot of posters are wondering how to get new clients, so I thought I would give you my "blow-by-blow" experiences.

I started my business in August of this year. Although I am most interested in commercial cleaning I need to have residential cleanings (easier to get) to pay the bills while growing the commercial side.

I was using Thumbtack to get cleanings for several months, but ran out of money to use Thumbtack. At this point I am happy that this happened. Now I can go get new clients without dealing with so much competition. Competition that was forcing my prices to be too low to have a viable business.

From reading on this forum I found that most flyer promotions were producing a 1/2% return or a little better. So 200 flyers delivered should produce one actual new client.

I decided to hand out 5000 flyers based upon these numbers. 5000 flyers should produce 25 new clients. Hopefully most will be reoccurring cleanings.

So far over a 3 day period I handed out 450 flyers. (my aching feet )

I received 3 calls from those flyers, strangely all in a two hour period. One was a move out cleaning (done, paid $145), one was a monthly cleaning (first cleaning done $75) and a potential every other week client. That didn't work as she wanted more than one person at a time cleaning due to time constraints.

So far the numbers have worked. When I get back from handing out flyers, I will post copies of my flyers (two different types - one amusing and one serious - didn't seem to matter which one I used) for you to use / modify if you want.
